Implementing cooperative learning in two international multicultural classrooms in Southeast Asia : teachers and students' perceptions
Abstract
This study is a qualitative case study. It aims to find out teachers and students’
perceptions about implementing cooperative learning in international multicultural
classrooms (IMCs). The implementation of different cooperative learning techniques,
structures, and strategies are discussed. Teachers and students’ perceptions of using
cooperative learning in two multicultural classrooms are presented. I also discussed the
benefits of using cooperative learning in multicultural classrooms, the challenges the
teachers may face, and the changes they need to make to implement cooperative learning
successfully.
The data of the study showed that the use of cooperative learning in an
international multicultural (IM) learning environment was helpful to break cultural
barriers caused by diverse viewpoints, enhance students’ learning, increase their social
skills, and improve levels of thinking. Through the study, I was able to understand what
teachers and students in two IMCs thought about the implementation of cooperative
learning and experience first-hand how other teachers, administrators, and I can improve
our teaching skills in an IM learning environment.
