Eschatological features in Malachi 4:1-6

Abstract

In Malachian studies, eschatology in Mal 4:1-6 is not given adequate attention. Most studies mention the subject in passing. Additionally, scholars approach the subject with incomprehensive methodologies. Consequently, this renders eschatology in Malachi as opaque. Additionally, this lack of lucidity is reflected in different views regarding the fulfillment of the prophecy. The study discusses the aforementioned issues in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, a multifaceted prophetic exegesis is proposed. The basic tenet behind the methodology is the incorporation of various aspects of text analysis such as historical and literary analysis, typology, and its attention to the fulfillment of the prophecy. In Chapter 3, a multifaceted prophetic exegesis is used to explore Mal 4:1-6. The approach reveals that Mal 4:1-6 has greater significance beyond its immediate context. The prophecy finds fulfillment in the person of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. In addition, it awaits final fulfillment during the time of judgment. Chapter 4 summarizes the study, highlights key findings, and suggests areas of further study.
