An understanding of the Barangay Health Worker’s (BHWs) perceived role expectations in the context of socio-cultural, legal, and religious milieu is useful for an improved BHW program development. This qualitative case study uses focus group discussions, key interviews, observations, and document reports. The aforementioned were retrieved from Lalaan 1 health center BHWs, midwife, and counselor for data collection. Analysis of the findings revealed the facilitator, health information provider, and program promoter roles, which BHWs most often perceive as expected of them in the reproductive health service provision. Social and cultural expectations revealed mostly navigator and supportive roles. BHWs reflected differing degrees of influence from legal constraints and community roles. The themes expressed from religious expectations and their involvement as members of a health team provided useful understanding of BHWs experiences. The study provides insight into BHWs’ perceived role expectations and offers training recommendations to barangay health center administrators and BHW program planners. These findings may be further beneficial to community health worker programs at local and national levels. The findings suggest that the primary health care idea of community-based health care delivery is worth implementing though this concept should be revisited within its operational context for better training and application.en_US
